Zahid apologises for 'Hidup Israel' blunder

KUALA LUMPUR: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi has apologised for mistakenly chanting "Hidup Israel" at the Palestine solidarity rally last night.

In a statement on Facebook, Zahid said his support for the Palestinian cause remained fervent.

"I was at the rally with thousands of Malaysians to show our support and solidarity for the liberation of Palestine.

"I apologise for the mistake I made in my speech in the heat of the moment.

"With a sincere heart, I strongly proclaim, 'Free Palestine!'"

Clips of Zahid chanting "Hidup Israel" at the rally in Bukit Jalil last night have gone viral.

About 12,000 Malaysians gathered at Axiata Arena for the Palestine solidarity rally.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Human Resources Minister Steven Sim, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail and other leaders attended the rally.

Anwar had said the rally aimed to convey Malaysia's strong condemnation of the murder of Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh. (https://www.nst.com.my/news/nation/2024/08/1085222/sundays-palestine-sol...)
