TELUK INTAN: An unemployed man was charged at the Sessions and Magistrate's Courts here today with four counts, including injuring policemen, last week.
The accused, Lok Yik Hoong, 43, pleaded not guilty to all charges when they were read out by the interpreter before Judge Intan Nurul Farena Zainal Abidin.
According to the charge sheet, the man is accused of deliberately causing serious injuries to Corporal Mohd Rasyidi Che Ross, 42, using a dangerous weapon that could potentially cause death, specifically a parang, at a house in Taman Melati, Padang Tembak here at 5.40pm on Aug 1.
The offence falls under Section 326 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 20 years, along with a fine or caning if convicted.
The prosecution is led by prosecuting officer Inspector Noor Aisyah Mat Isa, while the accused is not represented by a lawyer.
The court granted the accused bail of RM6,000 with one surety, along with additional conditions to report once a month at the nearest police station, and not to disturb the victim until the case is resolved.
The court set Sept 10 for the next mention.
For the second charge, Lok pleaded not guilty before Nurul Farena to the charge of possessing dangerous drugs, specifically cannabis estimated to weigh 84.72 grams, at the same location and time.
For this offence, he was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and may be punished under Section 39A(2) of the same Act, which provides for a minimum imprisonment of five years or life imprisonment and a minimum of 10 lashes if convicted.
The court ruled that no bail would be offered for this charge and set Oct 29 for the next mention.
Meanwhile, in a separate proceeding at the Magistrate's Court, Lok pleaded not guilty before Magistrate T. Ashvinii to the charge of intentionally causing injury using a parang on Inspector Tie Ngie Sieng, 34, at the same location and time.
This charge is framed under Section 324 of the Penal Code, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of 10 years, a fine, or caning if convicted.
Lok also pleaded not guilty to the charge of obstructing policemen, Assistant Superintendent Misran Osman and a team from the Hilir Perak Narcotics Crime Investigation Department, which included Inspector Tie Ngie Sieng, Corporal Mohd Rasyidi Che Ross, Corporal Shamimi Shafizie Mohamad Suhaimi, and Corporal Mohd Affendi Arsat, while they were performing their duties to raid his home.
The accused acted aggressively by shouting and rampaging with a parang at the same location and time.
As such, he is charged under Section 186 of the Penal Code and may be punished under the same Act, which provides for a maximum imprisonment of two years, a maximum fine of RM10,000, or both.
The prosecution is handled by prosecuting officer Inspector Nur Ainaa Liyana Mohd Talal, while the accused is represented by lawyer S. Kumaresan from the National Legal Aid Foundation.
The court granted bail of RM6,000 with one surety for both charges, along with additional conditions to not disturb the victims until the case is resolved and to report to the nearest police station every two weeks.
The court also set Sept 10 for the next mention.
It was reported on Aug 2 that two policemen were injured while trying to arrest a suspected drug offender, who was armed with a parang.
Corporal Mohd Rasyidi Che Ross sustained a torn vein in his left wrist, requiring surgery, while Inspector Tie Ngie Sieng suffered a four-centimetre gash on his left arm during the 5.40pm incident.
Perak police chief Datuk Azizi Mat Aris said the incident occurred when the policemen were deployed to arrest the 43-year-old suspect following a complaint by a family member.
Tensions escalated when the suspect refused to allow the policemen to carry out checks at his house in Taman Melati, Padang Tembak.
A scuffle broke out when the suspect ran amok and wielded the parang against the policemen. The suspect was successfully apprehended.
