Sarawak sets up maritime committee to look into shipping, safety

KUCHING: The Sarawak Transport Ministry will set up a maritime committee to look into shipping, logistics and safety.

State Transport Minister Datuk Seri Lee Kim Shin said the decision came after an engagement session yesterday with representatives from the shipping industry, shipbuilders and owners, logistics industry, chambers of commerce, port authority and the Customs, Immigration and Marine departments.

He said the representatives were briefed on the federal government's reinstatement of the cabotage policy for Sarawak and shipping and logistics matters.

"After listening to feedback and views from the stakeholders, the ministry proposed the setting up of the Sarawak Maritime Committee," Lee said today.

He said the decision was unanimously agreed on.

He said the purpose of the committee was to gather stakeholders and agencies, address maritime issues in Sarawak and work out a transformational roadmap.

Present at the meeting were state Deputy Transport Minister (Riverine and Marine) Datuk Henry Harry Jinep and the state ministry's riverine and marine section head Teo Swee Ann.
