Ministries to gather data, achievements for 'A Year of Madani Economy Report', says Fahmi

KUALA LUMPUR: Ministries are gathering data and achievements on the Madani Economy framework in preparation for the "A Year of Madani Economy Report" announcement by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today said Anwar would present the report at the closing ceremony of the Madani Rakyat Programme for the Southern Zone on Aug 17.

"It's been a year since the Madani Economy framework was launched, along with several policies, such as the National Energy Transformation Roadmap and Progressive Wage Policy.

"We will compile the progress made since the launch of the framework and provide it to the prime minister for presentation.

"Ministries will collect data for this purpose.

"InsyaAllah, it will be presented at the Madani Rakyat Programme in Johor next week."

He said this after flagging off participants in the Kembara Merdeka Jalur Gemilang convoy for Putrajaya and Kuala Lumpur.

Fahmi said more foreign companies were investing in the country.

"The ringgit strengthened to RM4.415 against the US dollar yesterday (Aug 9), and inflation remains low."

To steer Malaysia to become an economic powerhouse in the region, the government launched the framework last year.

Asked about whether Tesla shelving its plans to build a factory in either Thailand, Indonesia or Malaysia would affect the Starlink high-speed Internet project, Fahmi said: "It does not have an impact, as the company (Starlink) is a different company and will operate as usual."

Starlink is a satellite Internet constellation operated by Starlink Services LLC, a wholly-owned subsidiary of SpaceX.

Thai news portal The Nation, citing unnamed sources in the government, said Tesla had cancelled plans to build factories in Malaysia, Thailand and Indonesia.

"Tesla is not proceeding with plans in Malaysia, Indonesia or other locations, except in China, the United States and Germany."

Last year, Tesla had announced plans to open a headquarters in Malaysia, introduce a Tesla Experience Centre and Service Centre, and establish a super-fast charging network in the country.

Yesterday (Aug 9), Investment, Trade and Industry Minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz said Tesla had never committed to opening a factory in Malaysia.

In a post on X, Tengku Zafrul said the ministry had engaged in discussions with Tesla founder Elon Musk on attracting investment, but the discussions did not involve setting up a factory.

He said the foreign news report was not a statement from Tesla but rather quoted anonymous or unnamed sources. He urged reporters to verify the news with Tesla.
