KUCHING: One of Petronas' "twin torches" is on its final leg to Kuala Lumpur after journeying across Sabah and Sarawak, starting from Labuan on April 30 and ending here yesterday.
The other half of the "twin" had made its way around the peninsula on May 1.
Unlike the torch runs of major athletic events that we are all familiar with, the journey of the twin torches did not involve a relay of runners to take them from one place to another.
Petronas said the twin torches were to "illustrate the national oil company's journey over the past 50 years and highlight its contributions to the nation and communities it served".
The journeys were part of the oil and gas company's homecoming event and a tribute to its past, present and future, as it celebrates its 50th anniversary this year.
They were meant to showcase the company's remarkable evolution from a humble entity established in 1974, to a global energy player that operates worldwide, Petronas said.
"The homecoming is also a testament to the incredible feats that Petronas can accomplish when it works together, united and driven by the unstoppable force of a common purpose," it added.
In its journey across Sabah, Sarawak and the peninsula, Torch 1 (Sabah and Sarawak) and Torch 2 teams had visited every Petronas asset and areas positively impacted by collaborations with the company, besides engaging with local communities.
The assets included oil and gas platforms, refineries and other significant installations.
The start of the Sabah-Sarawak leg began at a community engagement programme themed "Discover Petronas@School", whereas the peninsular leg began at a ceremony to mark Malaysian Refining Company Sdn Bhd's (MRCSB) 30th anniversary at the Melaka Energy Park. MRCSB is a subsidiary of Petronas.
The journey was designed to reflect on the historical milestones by Petronas over the past five decades, highlighting its growth from a national oil company to global energy player.
Petronas added that the torch journey also symbolised unity and inclusivity, ensuring that the legacy of Petronas was shared and celebrated by all Malaysians.
Thus, the journey featured cultural performances and exhibitions that highlighted the rich diversity of Malaysia.
In the journey, Petronas also emphasised its commitment to sustainability by promoting environmental conservation and sustainable energy initiatives.
The twin torches themselves were made from recyclable plastic.
Torch 1 will be flown to Kuala Lumpur, where it will be reunited with its twin at the company's 50th anniversary celebration on Aug 17.
