MIRI: Deputy Health Minister Datuk Lukanisman Awang Sauni demands explanation over the ceiling leak incident at Miri Hospital following a visit to the scene at the emergency area.
In a Facebook post, he said visited the hospital following a viral video to assess the damage and find out whether the leakage was caused by a design failure on the newly constructed hospital block.
"The hospital's director provided an explanation regarding the contingency plan for the Green Zone emergency affected area, which they have now temporarily relocated to the Asthma Bay.
"The "triage" area was flooded due to rain water seeping through the ceiling during a heavy downpour.
"As an immediate measure, the hospital has set up a temporary triage space and a temporary pathway to the Green Zone," he said.
Lukanisman said a representative from the contractor's side was also present at the hospital to offer an explanation.
"I sought to determine whether there was a design failure that caused the water to overflow from the ceiling, and I have requested immediate action to repair the ceiling damage and to identify any potential issues on other floors.
"The hospital's maintenance concessionaire was also on-site to investigate the cause and has completed the cleanup," he said.
He also assured that the hospital has no issues in the Red and Yellow Zones of the Emergency Department, and services are as usual.
"During my visit, I met with several community members from the Sibuti and surrounding areas who were waiting for family members affected by various emergencies, including victims of Batu Niah car collision, a heart attack patient's family from Sg Rait and another former village head suffering from shortness of breath in the Entulang area," he said.
He said the hospital will issue an official statement tomorrow, and so far, no services have been disrupted.
"I have requested a thorough investigation and a detailed explanation from the relevant parties," Lukanisman said.
