Foreign Ministry: No Malaysians affected by Syria quake

KUALA LUMPUR: The Foreign Ministry has confirmed that no Malaysians were affected by a 4.8-magnitude earthquake that struck near Hama in Syria late last night.

The ministry, in a statement, said the earthquake, which occurred yesterday at 11.56pm Syrian time, impacted areas in Syria and Lebanon, with tremors felt as far as Jordan and Turkiye.

"The Foreign Ministry, through the Malaysian embassy in Beirut, Lebanon, and the Honorary Consul of Malaysia in Syria, is closely monitoring the situation," it said.

"Malaysians in the affected region who have yet to register their whereabouts are urged to do so immediately via the e-Konsular platform at ekonsular.kln.gov.my."

Earlier, a 4.8-magnitude earthquake hit Jordan and Syria yesterday, according to the German Research Centre for Geosciences (GFZ).

Tremors were felt in Lebanon, affecting residents across the region.

The earthquake occurred at a depth of 10 km, said GFZ, which initially recorded the magnitude at 5.46 before revising it down shortly afterwards.

Hama's Health director Maher Younis said at least 25 people sustained minor to moderate injuries due to panic-induced stampedes following the quake.
