Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre gets major overhaul after E. coli contamination

JOHOR BARU: The Johor Baru Municipal Council Arena Larkin Aquatic Centre is undergoing major cleaning and refurbishment to enhance safety.

Johor Menteri Besar Datuk Onn Hafiz Ghazi said that these efforts aimed at restoring public confidence in the state's sports facilities.

The refurbishment follows a Health Ministry closure notice issued on Aug 2, after 19 secondary school students reported nausea, fever, and skin itchiness during a swimming competition.

Subsequent tests revealed E. coli contamination in the pool water.

In a Facebook post today, Onn Hafiz said that the refurbishment included replacing the anti-corrosion system and tiles in both the diving and swimming pools.

The water drainage system will also be thoroughly cleaned to ensure it meets the highest safety standards.

The work is expected to be completed by November, with the centre scheduled to reopen in early January next year.
