KOTA KINABALU: AirAsia plans to invest in carbon offset projects in Sabah, according to Capital A CEO Tan Sri Tony Fernandes.
Fernandes, who is also AirAsia's strategic adviser, said that the airline would soon implement standardised carbon charges or sustainability fees for all passengers.
"We believe that if we are collecting funds for carbon offsets, it is crucial that these projects benefit the local community.
"Whether it's developing sustainable fuel, building wind farms, or enhancing forest cover, we want to focus on projects in Sabah. I have discussed this with the Chief Minister and will emphasise it further in my upcoming meetings," he said during a press conference after receiving an appreciation award from Sabah Tourism Board here.
Fernandes also defended AirAsia's environmental record, claiming that it was among the most carbon-efficient airlines globally due to its advanced technology and high seating capacity per flight.
He said that while airlines were often criticised for their carbon footprint, other sectors like artificial intelligence, cryptocurrency mining, and agriculture contributed significantly to emissions.
"Airlines are responsible for only 3 per cent of global emissions. We all need to address our carbon impact, not just the airlines," he added.
