KUALA LUMPUR: Stray and abandoned cats in Kuala Lumpur now have a new haven, thanks to an initiative by Kuala Lumpur City Hall (DBKL).
The newly launched DBKL Cat Park, unveiled by the Prime Minister's political secretary Datuk Azman Abidin, provides shelter and a chance for adoption to these animals.
The idea for the Cat Park was spearheaded by Bandar Tun Razak MP Datuk Seri Dr Wan Azizah Wan Ismail and Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Kamarulzaman Mat Salleh.
The park aims to address the stray cat issue and promote animal welfare in the city.
Azman said that the park would offer essential care, including shelter and medical attention, to manage the stray cat population and alleviate public disturbances.
It also supports the cat adoption programme in Kuala Lumpur, particularly in the Bandar Tun Razak area.
"This initiative is crucial as it helps control the stray cat population and reduce related complaints. By providing proper care and facilitating adoptions, we hope to address the increasing number of stray cats and prevent abuse," he said.
DBKL's Cat Adoption Programme aims to reduce the stray cat population by collaborating with non-governmental organisations (NGOs) to find homes for these animals.
Each adopted cat will be charged RM200, which covers their treatment, vaccination, and sterilisation.
Self-employed individual Yogeswary S Veloo praised the park, adding that it encouraged responsible care for stray cats rather than leaving them on the streets.
"Educating the public about sustainability and proper animal care is essential," she said.
Teacher Nuratikah Mohd Yusof also supported the initiative, noting the importance of educating people about animal welfare from a young age to foster responsible pet ownership.
The DBKL Cat Park not only provides a refuge for stray cats but also advances public awareness and encourages compassionate treatment of animals.
