KOTA BARU: Perikatan Nasional (PN) will field a candidate for the Mahkota by-election.
Pas Deputy President Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man stated that PN would be holding a meeting soon to discuss the matter.
"PN needs to field a candidate to enable us to win the Mahkota state seat in the September 28 by-election.
"This seat will likely be contested by a candidate from Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu).
"PN will hold a meeting to form a committee for the Mahkota by-election as soon as possible," he said when contacted.
The Kubang Kerian Member of Parliament said PAS would continue to mobilize its machinery to support PN.
"PAS's machinery will be drawn from the three southern states, Johor, Melaka, and Negri Sembilan, and will be assisted by additional teams from across the country," he added.
The Election Commission yesterday fixed Sept 28 for the Mahkota by-election.
The by-election will be held following the death of Sharifah Azizah on Aug 2.
EC chairman Datuk Seri Ramlan Harun announced that nomination day will be on September 14, while early voting is set for September 24.
The by-election will see 66,318 voters going to the polls, and the EC is allocating RM2.4 million for the process.
In the 15th Johor state election in 2022, Sharifah Azizah won the Mahkota seat with a majority of 5,166 votes.
She was in a four-cornered fight against Pakatan Harapan's Taqiuddin Cheman, Perikatan Nasional's Mohamad Nor Lingan, and Warisan's Mohamed Noor Suleiman.
Sharifah Azizah, who was receiving treatment at Enche' Besar Hajjah Khalsom Hospital in Kluang, passed away at the age of 63.
