KUALA LUMPUR: After Wanita Umno, Umno Youth also asked for their member to be chosen as the candidate for the Mahkota by-election.

The wing's Youth chief Dr Muhamad Akmal Saleh said their choice for the Sept 28 polls was the Kluang division Umno Youth chief Syed Hussien Syed Abdullah.

"Datuk Seri Abdul Rahman Dahlan, please bring Umno Youth's motion to the Supreme Council. We are proposing Syed Hussien as the candidate for Mahkota by-election.

"Just as how we helped Mohd Azmawi Fikri Abdul Ghani win in Nenggiri, we will help Hussien win in Mahkota, if he is chosen."

He said this to thunderous applause and repeated chants of "Hussien!" during the closing of the Youth delegates' meeting here, today.

However, Dr Akmal assured the wing would continue to help Umno win the election, even if Hussien was not chosen to be the candidate.

Later in a press conference, Dr Akmal reiterated that the wing will continue to serve the people even if its candidate for the Mahkota by-election was not chosen.

He also said there was nothing wrong if other wings, such as Wanita or Puteri, requested to contest in the upcoming Mahkota by-election.

"When a candidate is selected, we will ensure that they are the best (candidate).

"(And) I rarely propose candidates from the wing, but when we do, it is because we genuinely believe they are the best choice for the people.

"We have our candidate, Wanita has theirs and other people have their own preferred candidate, so there's nothing wrong with that.

"Ultimately, the chosen Umno candidate will be the best one (to contest) and whatever the case, we will adhere to the party leadership's decision."
