GUA MUSANG: Over 300 settlers under the South Kelantan Development Authority (Kesedar) have appealed to Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi to increase their monthly allowances from RM1,000 to RM2,000.
The plea was made during Zahid's visit to Gua Musang on Monday.
The settlers, from Jeram Tekoh, expressed their hope that the government would consider their request to help improve their livelihoods.
Settler Fauzi Awang said the letter containing the request was presented to Zahid by Jeram Tekoh settler head Fakri Mohamad.
"We have asked the deputy prime minister to consider increasing our monthly allowances as many of us are struggling to make ends meet due to the rising cost of living.
"I can see the smile on his (Zahid) face after receiving the letter. This is a positive sign for us," said the 65-year-old former rubber tapper.
Echoing the sentiment, 77-year-old settler Hasaan Ismail highlighted that their allowance had remained unchanged for nearly a decade.
Although it was previously increased from RM500 to RM1,000, the current amount was insufficient to meet their basic needs.
Gua Musang deputy Umno division chief Mohd Syahbuddin Hashim confirmed the settlers' appeal.
"The last adjustment was made 10 years ago, and the situation has drastically changed since then," he said.
