KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) has granted a final one-month extension to Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad's sons to declare their assets.
MACC Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki said that Tan Sri Mokhzani Mahathir and Mirzan Mahathir, now have until mid-September to submit their asset declarations.
"We have given a period of time to both of them which will end in mid-September. After they have declared, we will update the media.
"Let's wait until September because MACC has already given another month.
"This will be the final extension. If they fail to comply, the MACC will take legal action," Azam said at a press conference after officiating the Anti-Corruption Initiative Through the Empowerment of Accounting and Auditing Practices programme at a hotel here today.
In May, the MACC agreed to give an extension of time to Mirzan and Mokhzani, to declare their respective assets.
Mirzan and Mokhzani were instructed by MACC in January to declare their assets since 1981, the year Dr Mahathir became prime minister.
The investigation was conducted according to the MACC Act 2009, and the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001.
It was previously reported that Mokhzani and Mirzan were supposed to declare their assets on May 25 and May 29, respectively.
Previously, on April 26, it was reported that Mirzan and Mokhzani had been given a 30-day extension by the MACC to declare their assets.
Prior to this, the two had been given an extension by the MACC in February.
