Fahmi denies asking Google to disable ringgit currency converter widget [WATCH]

KUALA LUMPUR: Unity government spokesman Fahmi Fadzil has refuted claims suggesting that he has instructed Google to disable its currency converter widget for the ringgit.

Fahmi, who is also the Communications Minister, said Google disabled the widget following feedback from Bank Negara Malaysia.

"Google said they are still running tests with FX data provider whom they had identified and that they would restore the widget once they are confident that incidents will not reoccur," he said in a post on X today.

Fahmi said this in response to a posting accusing him of instructing Google to disable the widget.

Google Malaysia in March issued an apology for the erroneous US Dollar-Ringgit (USD-MYR) exchange rate published on its finance page.

It also went on to say that it provides currency exchange rates for informational purposes only.

The apology came about after Bank Negara Malaysia said exchange rate between the Malaysian ringgit and USD issued by Google in February in accurate.
