Comms Ministry to launch National Online Safety Campaign amid growing cyberbullying concerns

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will soon launch a comprehensive National Online Safety Awareness Campaign to tackle online challenges, with a special focus on combating cyberbullying.

Deputy Communications Minister Teo Nie Ching said the campaign would build on existing efforts to promote responsible internet use.

"This includes expanding programmes such as 'Click Wisely,' which has conducted 1,429 sessions since 2012 and reached 10.3 million people, and enhancing the Malaysian Information Communications Technology (ICT) Volunteers programme," she said at a press conference today.

She said these initiatives, along with new public service announcements and social media campaigns, aimed to foster a culture of digital responsibility and empower Malaysians to navigate the online world safely.

Teo also called on the public to use their skills and knowledge to combat cyberbullying, create safer online spaces, promote digital empathy, and empower victims to speak out.

"Addressing cyberbullying not only protects individuals but also encourages more women to pursue ICT careers without fear of online harassment," she said.

Teo said the ministry had collaborated with online service providers like Meta and Google to enhance online safety moderation.

She added that Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil had also highlighted this issue when he met with Meta and other social media platforms during his recent visit to Singapore.
