KL welcomes first female mayor

KUALA LUMPUR: Newly-appointed Mayor Datuk Seri Paduka Maimunah Mohd Sharif shoulders the hopes and expectations of residents, including the 11 members of parliament, in addressing the city's long-standing issues, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil today.

Fahmi, also Lembah Pantai MP, said he hoped she would be able to address municipal issues faced by some two million residents and about five to six million people commuting to Kuala Lumpur for work and others.

"KL MPs hope the mayor can hold meetings with us to gather feedback on issues in our areas.

"I have full confidence in Datuk Seri (Maimunah's) ability as a mayor to bring new energy to City Hall," he said after witnessing the MoU signing ceremony between Bernama and the Social Security Organisation (Perkeso).

Other matters that needed attention included issues regarding the Kuala Lumpur Local Plan and the Commissioner of Buildings (CoB).

Fahmi said apart from Maimunah's expertise in the local government, her past position at the United Nations Human Settlement Programme (UN-Habitat) also reflected her calibre in dealing with leaders from sovereign countries.

"She was able to mediate with leaders from two countries embroiled in geopolitical conflict in seeking an amiable way to express views on UN-Habitat context.

"So, I have faith that she will be able to engage the people, including the MPs, in steering Kuala Lumpur to greater heights."
