'I couldn't bear to see his severed leg,' mother mourns son killed in motorcycle crash

TUMPAT: Hanisah Mohd Zin, the mother of an 18-year-old vocational college student killed in a motorcycle accident on Jalan Pasir Pekan here last night, said she couldn't bring herself to get out of the car upon arriving at the scene.

The fatal accident, which occurred around 12.30am, also claimed the life of Aqil's friend, Mohammad Ameer Haziq Noor Ariff Irwantoo, also 18. Both were students at Pengkalan Chepa Vocational College.

Hanisah, 45, added that she could only watch from a distance as both her son and his friend lie on the road, covered with cloth.

She recounted being contacted by a family member about the accident involving her son, Muhammad Aqil Zulaini, at 12.45am and rushed to the scene.

"I was informed that my son was in a road accident, but a mother's instinct told me Aqil was gone because his leg was also severed," she said.

"Aqil's left leg was severed up to the calf, and I couldn't bear to see his body lying on the road. Only Allah knows how I felt at that moment—my emotions were a mix of anxiety, sadness, and disbelief. I could only watch Aqil from afar while being comforted by family members," she shared when met at the Tumpat Hospital Forensic Unit today.

Hanisah, who is a teacher at a primary school in Pasir Mas, said that she had spoken with Aqil just yesterday afternoon while they enjoyed soto she had brought back from a school event.

"Aqil said that the soto didn't taste as good as the one I usually make and asked me to prepare it for him another time. I just replied, 'I'll cook it for you sometime.' After Maghrib prayers, I noticed Aqil had gone out but didn't say where he was going.

"Not long after, he returned home while I was already asleep, and then he went out again until we were shocked by the news of Aqil's accident.

"Today, we were supposed to have a family gathering for a meal, but it didn't happen because Aqil has left us forever," she said, adding that the funeral will be held at the Kampung Banggol Islamic Cemetery in Kota Baru.

It is understood that the two victims were riding separate motorcycles from Kota Baru heading towards Pasir Pekan when they made a U-turn and collided with an oncoming car.

Meanwhile, Tumpat police chief Assistant Commissioner Mohd Khairi Shafie confirmed receiving a report on the incident. The case is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act (APJ) 1987.
