KUALA LUMPUR: A total of 208 higher education institution students in the Titiwangsa parliamentary constituency received cash assistance of RM1,000 each to help ease the burden of purchasing laptops for their studies.
Titiwangsa member of Parliament Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani handed over the assistance to the recipients during a ceremony here today.
Johari, who is also the Plantation and Commodities Minister, said the assistance is specifically meant for B40 families to ease the financial burden they face in ensuring their children have access to tertiary education.
"I am aware of the high expenses that families must bear to ensure their children can continue their studies in a comfortable situation at university.
"And the need to have laptops has become necessary among students nowadays.
"As such, we have prepared some allocations to children of families in the Titiwangsa parliamentary constituency who needed assistance.
"Through this programme, I hope that it can help boost the spirit of the students to continue their studies and achieve excellent results," Johari told reporters after attending the Majlis Penyampaian Sumbangan kepada Pelajar IPTA & IPTS Siri 2/2024 here today.
This is the second time the programme is being held this year involving RM208,000 allocation.
Johari said that through the programme, cash assistance of RM1,000 was provided instead of directly giving laptops to the students.
"We did not provide assistance in the form of physical items since some of the students already have personal computers. Nevertheless, with the (cash) assistance given, the students can upgrade their gadgets.
"For those without laptops, the RM1,000 assistance can be used, and they may only need to add a little more to purchase one.
"Students entering university need a laptop. Without one, it is difficult for them to complete their assignments.
"Nowadays, borrowing (laptops) is no longer practical because university assignments are numerous and challenging for students," he said.
