Saifuddin: Treating injured Palestinians testimony of govt support for humanitarian crises

KUBANG PASU: The government's initiative to bring in injured Palestinians from Gaza for medical treatment underscores the country's longstanding commitment to providing refuge to those in need during international humanitarian crises.

Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said this was not the first time Malaysia had extended such assistance as the government had previously aided the people of Vietnam, Afghanistan and Bosnia-Herzegovina.

He said that the foreign nationals will be repatriated to their home countries once tensions subside or sent to a third country that permits refugee entry.

"Records show that we are among the quickest to offer help. During the Vietnam War, many would recall how Malaysia provided an island in Terengganu and established a refugee settlement in Sungai Besi, Kuala Lumpur.

"In the 1980s, when the Soviet Union invaded Afghanistan, we brought Afghan students here because the conflict disrupted their education. We supported them with tuition, scholarships, accommodation and opportunities to study at local universities.

"Similarly, during the 1990s Bosnian War, amidst political unrest and mass killings, we assisted. This is why, even today, when we visit Bosnia-Herzegovina, they deeply appreciate Malaysia's support," he told reporters after opening the state-level Merdeka Day celebrations at Politeknik Sultan Abdul Halim Muadzam Shah here today.

Saifuddin added that the government was now taking similar action as the people of Gaza face turmoil, with many women and children killed by the Zionist regime of Israel.

He said Malaysia was moved by the plight of the Palestinian people and one of the ways to help them was by bringing those injured in the conflict to receive treatment in the country.

"We are fulfilling our role as Gaza and the Palestinian people are enduring heavy trials, with children being killed, and the elderly and women losing their lives due to attacks by the Zionist regime, leaving many wounded.

"In response, Malaysia is providing support by bringing them to be treated at the Armed Forces Hospital in Wangsa Maju. The Defence Ministry and the Home Ministry are managing their documentation during their stay here.

"When a country faces trials and uncertainties that lead to loss of life and property, Malaysia is among those with a proven record of providing effective assistance," he added.

On Friday, two Royal Malaysian Air Force (RMAF) aircraft carrying 127 injured Palestinian civilians and their relatives arrived in the country following a flight from Almaza Air Base in Egypt.

The mission was undertaken following Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's announcement at the Palestine Solidarity Rally on Aug 4 in Kuala Lumpur where he said that the country will provide medical treatment to injured Palestinian civilians.
