Johor govt supports ferry route proposal to Tuas, Singapore from Forest City

ISKANDAR PUTERI: The Johor government endorsed the need for enhanced connectivity to and from Forest City, particularly for a direct link to Singapore.

The proposed initiative would be aimed at attracting more investors to the Special Financial Zone (SFZ) and the Johor-Singapore Special Economic Zone (JS-SEZ).

State Trade Investment and Consumer Affairs Committee chairman Lee Ting Han said seamless transportation modes to Singapore is seen as a vital factor in boosting the SFZ and JS-SEZ appeal to international investors and visitors.

On Thursday, Forest City hosted a subject matter expert seminar for over 800 experts to share their observations and research findings on the implementation of SFZ and JS-SEZ.

The experts suggested a direct ferry route from Forest City to Tuas in Singapore to improve connectivity in the special zones, a move which they said could effectively alleviate the pressure on the existing customs clearance at checkpoints.

They also suggested that multiple ferry routes between Johor and Singapore be established, which is feasible given Johor's geographical advantages.

Lee said one of the key success factors for the JS-SEZ, SFZ or development in general is connectivity, be it people, goods, capital or data.

"In the case of Forest City, the Johor government has engaged with the developer on this matter and we believe having direct access from the site to Singapore will greatly improve the attractiveness of Forest City, especially in terms of easing the arrival of international investors and tourists to Forest City," he said when contacted.

He added that the state government was in full support of the proposal and will assist accordingly.

"We are waiting for the confirmed proposal from Forest City for us to take it to next stage," he added.

Lee said the proposed ferry routes will take time to come to fruition, as discussions and negotiations with Singaporean authorities were required prior to its implementation.
