CAAM to address gaps in foreign-registered aircraft regulations , says Loke

KUALA LUMPUR: The Civil Aviation Authority of Malaysia (CAAM) is expected to address the gaps in regulations concerning foreign-registered aircraft operating in the country, following the Beechcraft Model 390 plane crash in Elmina last year.

Transport Minister Anthony Loke said a recent report by the Air Accident Investigation Bureau identified shortcomings in regulations governing foreign-registered aircraft in aspects related to their general aviation operations and not in aspects of their commercial flights operations.

"As for enforcement, I leave it to CAAM to conduct further investigations to determine whether these aviation companies violated regulations or breached our civil aviation laws.

"General aviation companies do not operate regular passenger flights, so their operations differ. There is indeed a need to tighten regulations concerning foreign aircraft, which may be owned by foreign companies and not licensed in Malaysia," he said when quoted by Bernama.

He was speaking at a press conference following the signing ceremony of a car park sales agreement between Malaysia Rapid Transit System (MRTS) and Coronade Properties Sdn Bhd here today.

Loke said CAAM is currently conducting a study on the matter, and the findings will be presented to the ministry by the end of this year.

On Saturday, CAAM initiated a comprehensive review of Regulation 147 of the Civil Aviation Regulations 2016, pertaining to the operation of foreign-registered aircraft in general aviation.

CAAM chief cxecutive officer Datuk Captain Norazman Mahmud had said that the review aligns with the safety recommendations provided by Air Accident Investigation Bureau , and the proposed new regulations are expected to be published by the end of 2024.

In the incident on Aug 17 2023, a Beechcraft Model 390 jet en route to the airport in Subang crashed near Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor, claiming the lives of 10 people. - BERNAMA
