PUTRAJAYA: The exchange of gunfire between police and criminals in an open location is not a reckless act; instead, it takes into account various aspects, including public safety.
Citing the recent shootout in Jalan PJS 9/1 in Subang Jaya, Selangor on Tuesday as an example, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said it was a calculated move, subsequently demonstrating the efficiency and professionalism of the police force at its best.
"Even though the shooting incident occurred in an open area, it's important to note that there were no public casualties because all relevant factors were considered.
"The police carefully plan their actions, including identifying the area and corners to surround the suspect before proceeding. This indicates that the actions are not reckless.
"In such operations, the police also took into account their own safety and public safety, ensuring that these considerations are addressed before carrying out the operation," he told reporters after attending his ministry's monthly assembly and Merdeka Day celebration.
On Tuesday, police killed an African man in a shootout in Bandar Sunway.
Yesterday, it was reported that the suspect killed in the shooting is believed to be a member of a robbery gang active since 2018.
The armed gang, responsible for RM8 million in losses, is believed to comprise 10 African men known for targeting victims through fraudulent transactions.
Police are tracking down the remaining members of the gang.
