KUALA LUMPUR: Membership in intergovernmental organisation BRICS is likely to benefit Malaysian businesses, especially in the palm oil, rubber, and electronics sectors.
"Malaysia's application to BRICS will also allow our country to tap into new markets and increase and create investment opportunities," Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said at The Edge Billion Ringgit Club 2024 award ceremony and gala.
In June, Anwar announced that the country was to begin the process of joining BRICS after speaking with Brazilian president Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva on the intention.
"Increased market access to BRICS is likely to benefit businesses, especially in the palm oil, rubber, and electronics sector," he said.
The award ceremony and gala was also attended by Investment, Trade, and Industry minister Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Abdul Aziz, The Edge Media Group chairman Datuk Tong Kooi Ong, The Edge CEO Datuk Ho Kay Tat, as well as business representatives.
