PM heading to Brunei for bilateral talks tomorrow

KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim will be leaving for Brunei Darussalam on a two-day working trip tomorrow (Sunday) to attend the 25th Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders' Consultation (ALC).

In a statement today (Saturday), Wisma Putra said Anwar will be attending the ALC, the highest bilateral mechanism between Malaysia and Brunei Darussalam, accompanied by a delegation of high-profile officials.

They include Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Utama Mohamad Hasan, Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, International Trade and Industry Minister Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz, Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambry Abd Kadir, Education Minister Fadhlina Sidek, Sarawak Deputy Premier Datuk Seri Awang Tengah Ali Hasan, Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Hasbi Habibollah, Deputy Youth and Sports Minister Adam Adli Abd Halim, Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) Dr Zulkifli Hasan and other senior government officials.

"During this 25th session, Anwar and His Majesty Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah Mu'izzaddin Waddaulah of Brunei will review the progress of bilateral cooperation and address outstanding issues between the two nations.

"As close neighbours and partners within Asean, the two leaders will also discuss regional and international matters of mutual interest. The meeting is expected to culminate in the signing of several bilateral agreements," it said.

It added that this consultation aims to further enhance the strong bilateral relations and multifaceted cooperation between the two nations, which are deeply rooted in shared cultural, linguistic, and historical ties.

Last year, Brunei Darussalam ranked as Malaysia's 30th largest trading partner and 6th among Asean member states, with total trade reaching RM9.31 billion.

Wisma Putra said Malaysia's exports to Brunei were valued at RM6.40 billion, while imports totaled RM2.91 billion, resulting in a trade surplus of RM3.49 billion.

"From January to May 2024, Malaysia recorded total trade with Brunei of RM3.53 billion," it said.
