Another vote of confidence for Anwar unnecessary, says Saifuddin

KUALA LUMPUR: PKR secretary-general Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail has shot down a fellow party member's proposal to hold a vote of confidence for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

Saifuddin, who is Home Minister, said Anwar already proved his majority support in the Dewan Rakyat through a vote of confidence in December 2022, during the first sitting after his appointment.

"The Dewan Rakyat also passed Budget 2024 with over 140 members of Parliament supporting it," he said according to a Malaysiakini report.

"So the proposal is irrelevant. Surely we do not have to hold a vote of confidence every year."

He was commenting on Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim's proposal for Anwar to prove his legitimacy once and for all after former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin raised the issue this week.

Muhyiddin is being probed for allegedly questioning the role that the former Yang di-Pertuan Agong Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah, played in Anwar's appointment.

The allegations stemmed from Muhyiddin's claim that he secured the support of 115 MPs after the 15th general election, which he argued should have led to his appointment as prime minister.

Tengku Mahkota of Pahang Tengku Hassanal Ibrahim Alam Shah Al-Sultan Abdullah Ri'ayatuddin Al-Mustafa Billah Shah has called on the police to act against Muhyiddin for allegedly touching on 3R issues.
