Johor steps up Mpox fight: Awareness drive targets high-risk groups

JOHOR BARU: The State Health Department has intensified its efforts to combat the rising global concerns over Monkeypox (Mpox) with proactive measures.

State Health and Environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said that targeted activities to raise awareness and bolster preventive measures among high-risk groups had begun on Aug 17.

This initiative aligns with the country's increased efforts to address the recent surge in Mpox cases worldwide.

Efforts are focused on outreach and education programs for vulnerable communities, particularly men who engage in sexual activities with other men.

Ling said that the health department would use social media platforms – such as Facebook, Telegram, Twitter, and Grindr – to share information through videos and webinars.

The department will also collaborate with non-governmental organisations active in these communities to conduct outreach programmes.

"We aim to encourage those at risk to get tested, and pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) will be offered," he said.

Public health screenings will be conducted at all international entry points in the state to detect potential cases early.

Frontline health workers will receive training to recognise Mpox symptoms and take appropriate measures to isolate and treat suspected cases.

"An Mpox operations room is on standby and ready to be activated if any cases are reported in Johor.

"Currently, there are no Mpox cases in the state, but we are taking proactive measures," said Ling.

Earlier, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said that efforts were concentrated on four main entry points into the country to assist the Health Ministry in preventing the spread of Mpox.
