Malaysia, Brunei expected to meet land border target by 2034

BANDAR SERI BEGAWAN: Malaysia and Brunei are expected to meet their target of measuring the remaining 70 per cent of the land border between the two countries by 2034, said Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Mohamad Hasan today.

"We have agreed on 33 per cent of the boundary demarcation. About 70 per cent remains to be finalised, with a target completion date set for 2034.

"This process will involve further negotiations," he said at Brunei International Airport here.

Mohamad was part of the entourage accompanying Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for the 25th Malaysia-Brunei Darussalam Annual Leaders' Consultation at Istana Nurul Iman earlier.

He added that land demarcation was one of the three memorandums of understanding (MoUs) signed at the meeting.

There was also an exchange of documents related to the total 528.450km land boundary between the two countries.

The second MoU relates to cooperation in the transportation sector, focusing on flights between Brunei and Sarawak, as well as Brunei and Sabah.

Mohamad said: "The goal is to boost tourism by improving connectivity between Brunei, Sabah and Sarawak, leveraging Brunei's direct flights to these regions and fostering better coordination to boost the tourism industry in all three areas."

The third MoU involves the exchange of letters concerning maritime access.

He said he had held discussions with the working committee two weeks ago to address maritime access issues, particularly for fishermen.

"While the maritime boundary has been agreed on, maritime access needs further coordination to ensure that fishermen can traverse the boundary areas smoothly."
