2.6mil travellers screened for mpox since Aug 16

PUTRAJAYA: None of the 2.64 million travellers screened for mpox since Aug 16 showed any signs of infection, says the Health Ministry.

So far, of the 33 people suspected of having mpox, 32 have tested negative. One person's test results are still not out.

According to Bernama, the ministry said travellers from high-risk countries are urged to keep an eye out for symptoms up to 21 days after their arrival here.

The ministry said 13 labs in the country, comprising eight government and five private labs can test for mpox, with two labs able to detect the variant of the virus.

Though no cases have been detected, the ministry has already engaged various agencies and NGOs on the role each organisation must play in preventing the spread of mpox.

The ministry said to date, the World Health Organization (WHO) has not issued any advisory on putting in place any travel restrictions to curb the spread of mpox.

"As such, those visiting high-risk countries are advised to take precautionary measures including practising good hygiene and avoiding contact with people or animals with symptoms.

"Those who experience symptoms should seek medical attention."

Previously, Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the authorities were focused on screening at four main entry points into Malaysia to prevent the spread of mpox.

WHO has declared mpox a public health emergency of international concern following an outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo that has spread to neighbouring countries.
