Kedah siblings, both Merdeka babies, continue shared birthday tradition

SUNGAI PETANI: Thirteen-year-old Grace Chan and her younger brother, Daniel, 12, continued their tradition of having a Merdeka-themed birthday celebration today.

Both Grace and Daniel were born in Penang on August 31, in 2011 and 2012 respectively.

Their birthday parties once again featured the Jalur Gemilang, blending their personal milestones with their patriotic spirit.

For these siblings, who now live in Sungai Petani, the dual celebrations do not diminish the significance of either occasion. Instead, it doubles their joy.

Grace said she was honoured to share her birthday with her brother and Merdeka Day.

"We feel proud at being born on Merdeka Day. It's a unique and special connection to our country's history and independence.

"We often marvel at the coincidence of being born on such a historic day, despite not being twins," she told NST.

Grace said for her, Merdeka represents love for Malaysia, freedom, unity, and the power of Malaysians to shape their destiny.

"Our ancestors endured significant struggles to secure our country's independence, and we feel a responsibility to be good citizens and work towards a better future," said the Form 1 student from SMJK Sin Min.

Daniel said his unique birthday often sparks interest among his peers.

"Our friends sometimes express a bit of envy, thinking it's cool and lucky to share a birth date with Malaysia.

"But they've also shared in our excitement and celebrations over the years. It makes it easy for our friends and teachers to remember our birthday," said Daniel, who attends SJKC Sin Min B.

Their father, Dr Bernard Chan, 52, said his children's shared birthday is a fun fact he enjoys sharing with friends and family.

"The fact that both were born on such an important day, albeit in different years, strengthens their sibling connection. Both have big dreams of contributing to Malaysia's future.

"They are inspired by Merdeka and hope to make a significant positive impact, whether through community service, pursuing careers that help the nation grow, or by promoting unity and patriotism among their peers," said the general surgeon from Pantai Hospital in Sungai Petani.

His wife, Nancy Tan, 44, expressed how blessed she and her husband feel to have two children born on Merdeka Day.

"We're proud to raise them with the values of independence and patriotism, and their birthdays are a constant celebration of their love for the country.

"Plus, Dad is thrilled they can share a birthday cake," said the homemaker.
