Geology Department to issue statements about safety of Kuala Lumpur

KUALA LUMPUR: The Geology Department will be issuing statements about the safety of Kuala Lumpur.

Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Federal Territories) Dr Zaliha Mustafa said she has received inquiries concerning the city's safety from numerous parties.

"I want to emphasise that Kuala Lumpur is generally in a safe condition.

"We have discussed this matter with the experts, including from the Geology Department," she said.

On Aug 23, G. Vijaya Lakshmi, 48, a tourist from India, went missing after falling into an 8m-deep hole caused by a sinkhole in Jalan Masjid India.

Zaliha said the search-and-rescue operation to locate the missing woman has now transitioned into a search-and-recovery operation.

She added that the mapping of utilities and study of soil structure spanning the entire city would be part of the new operation.
