Special task force finalising study on AGC-public prosecutor separation of powers

SUNGAI PETANI: The Special Task Force for Comparative Studies on the separation of powers between the Attorney-General Chambers (AGC) and the public prosecutor's office is still finalising its studies.

Attorney-General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh said the committee, under the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU) of the Prime Minister's Department, has visited several countries to carry out the studies.

"It is still being studied. A team from the AGC is also on the committee, they are still carrying out the studies.

"They have visited several countries and are still in the process of finalising (the studies)," he told reporters after attending the AGC's 'Santuni Madani' programme in Paya Nahu Flats here today.

Asked if there is any timeframe set for the task force to complete its studies, he said the matter is under the BHEUU's purview.

Last October, Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said said the efforts to separate the powers between the AGC and the public prosecutor's office would be conducted in three different phases.

She was reported as saying that this was due to the complexity and difficulty of the matter.

Azalina had said for the first phase of the effort, the task force was working on evidence-based research on several countries to examine and formulate the most suitable model for Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Terrirudin said the 'Santuni Madani' programme in the flats was in line with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's initiative for government leaders and head of government agencies to engage with their respective local communities to improve the people's socioeconomic.

"I visited this area when I was serving as the Kedah state Legal Advisor in 2019 and it's located just one kilometre away from my hometown.

"The objective of this programme is to carry out a continuous effort to improve the quality of education and social aspects of the community here.

"Paya Nahu Flats is located in an urban area that warrants special attention from the government.

"The AGC will serve as the bridge to link up all federal agencies and the state agencies to ensure the programme runs smoothly," he said.
