KUALA LUMPUR: Safety or integrity audits must be conducted regularly for infrastructure and old buildings to ensure its safety.
Alliance for a Safe Community chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said such measures were essential to ensure that the foundations of the structures did not pose risks if similar incidents, such as the recent sinkhole tragedy in Jalan Masjid India, were to recur.
"In addition to requiring a geotechnical report for projects in Kuala Lumpur, we propose that safety or integrity audits be regularly carried out for infrastructure projects and old buildings.
"These audits should be made compulsory every two to three years for all buildings," he said.
Lee welcomed Kuala Lumpur Mayor Datuk Seri Dr Maimunah Mohd Sharif's announcement that developers submit a geotechnical report for projects in Kuala Lumpur.
"This new requirement by City Hall that a report is produced for development projects in Kuala Lumpur is a step in the right direction.
"Geotechnical reports, which examine the soil and ground conditions of development sites, are vital in the wake of the recent sinkhole tragedy in Jalan Masjid India.
"The safety of the site and surrounding buildings must be prioritised in development projects."
Lee said public participation was also essential to ensure the safety of the city.
"If the people come across any issue that they suspect may lead to serious problems, they must bring them to the attention of the authorities.
"I hope that City Hall will establish a hotline for residents to report such concerns.
"Let us all work towards a safer Kuala Lumpur. I believe it is the responsibility of the authorities, the public, the private sector and non-governmental organisations to work together to make the city a safer place for all."
