JOHOR BARU: Authorities are in the process of identifying a mysterious chemical substance in Sungai Pandan, Kampung Melayu Pandan, which is believed to be causing a chemical odour that has spread to three residential areas approximately 10 kilometres away.
Johor State Health and Environment committee chairman Ling Tian Soon said water and soil samples had been collected for analysis.
"Although the pH levels of the water tested was normal, yet there is evidence of a chemical presence in Sungai Pandan," Ling told a press conference at the site, today.
"The chemical substance's specific nature is unknown but recorded high concentration levels that exceeded typical levels.
"We are awaiting the arrival of experts from the Melaka Fire and Rescue Department to conduct a thorough analysis to identify the substance.
"Department of Environment (DoE) officers are on site to conduct an investigation," he said.
He added that DoE is expected to provide a detailed report soon.
Earlier, residents in Taman Daya, Mount Austin, and Taman Istimewa, were alarmed by a strong chemical-like odour that lingered from midnight until the early hours of the morning today.
Ling said there have been no reports of significant symptoms or residents seeking medical attention at public health clinics or hospitals.
However, Ling advised residents to visit nearby healthcare facilities if they experience any health issues and to wear masks if needed.
As a precaution, a kindergarten with 75 students in the affected area has been temporarily closed, and all afternoon religious school sessions have been suspended.
Ling also stated that once the chemical is identified, the Department of Environment will conduct enforcement inspections at approximately 100 factories in the area.
