[Updated] Sec-gens, state secretaries, dept heads to review outdated SOPs, policies

PUTRAJAYA: All secretaries-general, state secretaries and department heads have been directed to review outdated policies, regulations and standard operating procedures (SOPs)s) at their respective ministry-, state government- and department-level.

Chief Secretary to the Government Datuk Seri Shamsul Azri Abu Bakar said such outdated policies, regulations and SOPs have potential to lead to abuse of power.

Berita Harian also quoted him as saying that such a thing allows an opportunity for possible malpractice and graft .

"I give serious focus to matters of governance, and abuse of power including disciplinary cases involving corruption and breach of trust.

"Therefore, I am giving this rebuke and I am reminding all secretaries-general, state secretaries and department heads to review old and outdated policies, regulations and SOP at their respective ministry, state government and department ," he said on Facebook.

"Policies, regulations and SOPs need to be improved in accordance with the principle of good governance, which is about transparency, accountability, competency and effectiveness.

"Besides that, there were cases in MACC's report that were postponed between six and 10 years and they have yet to be resolved at the ministry- and agency-level. I have asked for this matter to be given serious attention because it could affect the integrity screening and career path of an officer. Integrity is doing the right thing even when no one is watching," he said.

Shamsul Azri said he had earlier today chaired the 2/2024 National Governance Committee meeting.

Those who attended the meeting were Public Service director-general Datuk Seri Wan Ahmad Dahlan Abdul Aziz, Attorney-General Datuk Ahmad Terrirudin Mohd Salleh, Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki together with a majority of the ministries secretaries-general and representatives of state secretaries.
