SEREMBAN: A traffic police officer who was critically injured after being hit by a 'mat rempit' on the Kajang-Seremban Expressway in July is now grappling with memory loss.
Negeri Sembilan Traffic Investigation and Enforcement Department chief, Superintendent Muhammad Zaki Ramat said the officer has yet to resume duties and is still recovering from memory loss he experienced as a result of the July 28 incident.
"In the incident, the officer suffered severe head injuries and was admitted to the intensive care unit before being moved to a regular ward.
"He was discharged from the ward on Aug 16, but as of today, he has not fully recovered and is still unable to return to work," he said, when contacted today.
He added the officer, who has four children aged between four and eleven, is showing improvement but remains largely quiet due to difficulties with memory.
"Fortunately, his condition is improving, but we are concerned because he speaks little and struggles with remembering things.
"However, the JSPT Negeri Sembilan team, along with colleagues from the District Police Headquarters and friends, frequently visit him to offer support and assistance. Let us all pray for his full recovery," he said.
When asked about the action taken against the suspect in the case, Muhammad Zaki said the case is in progress and the teenager involved is being investigated under Section 42(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
"The investigation is ongoing, and he will be charged in court once it is completed. It is also understood that the teenager's parents may face legal action," he said, without elaborating on the details.
On July 28, it was reported that both the police officer and the teenager were seriously injured after their motorcycles collided at kilometre 36 (southbound) on the Lekas Highway at 2am during 'Ops Samseng Jalanan'.
It is understood that the crash was caused by the teenager's negligence in riding his motorcycle against the flow of traffic, leading to the collision with the officer.
