Eight vehicle owners fined for failing exhaust test

ALOR STAR: The Department of Environment (DoE) has issued compound against eight vehicle owners for failing exhaust test during a static operation in Jalan Lencong Timur, Sungai Petani yesterday.

Kedah DoE director Sharifah Zakiah Syed Sahab said the vehicles were among 640 inspected during a multiple agency crime prevention operation organised by the Kuala Muda district police.

"About 640 vehicles were inspected with 53 diesel-engine vehicles have been inspected by the Kedah DoE.

"From the total, eight vehicles were slapped with a compound under Section 48A of the Environmental Quality Act 1974 and the Environmental Regulations (Diesel engine exhaust) 1996.

"The maximum compound for the offence is RM2,000.

"The owners of the vehicles concerned have been told to bring back their respective vehicles for another round of inspection after fixing the issue.

The maximum level of permitted smoke discharge from vehicles is set at 50 per cent.
