Plantations and Commodities Ministry considers merging agencies for efficiency

KUALA LUMPUR: The Plantations and Commodities Ministry will review the need for the merging of agencies as part of reform efforts to provide effective services to the public.

Its minister Datuk Seri Johari Abdul Ghani said several agencies under his ministry now had smaller roles due to the contraction in the commodity plantations under them.

"There is no overlapping of functions in the ministry, but there are agencies under whose roles have shrunk.

"In the past, our commodity plantations were bigger but now it has gotten smaller. So when it becomes smaller, some agencies can be merged," he said after launching the 2024 World Eczema Day at Hospital Kuala Lumpur here, today.

On Tuesday, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said the government had set up a secretariat to overcome administrative issues and those related to the country's expenses.

At the Finance Ministry's monthly assembly, Anwar highlighted that there were too many statutory bodies whose functions overlapped and complicated operations.

He said the Secretariat for the Rationalisation Study of Federal Statutory Bodies would start its duties immediately as one of the government's exercises in reforming the civil service.

"This rationalisation aims to reduce spending due to excessive expenditure and waste," he added.
