Eight landslide hotspots,18 water surge locations identified in Kelantan

KOTA BARU: The state Fire and Rescue Department has identified eight areas prone to landslides and 18 locations for water surge phenomenon that may endanger people's lives during the upcoming monsoon season.

Its director Zainal Mandasin said the eight landslide areas were located in three districts, namely Gua Musang, Jeli and Kuala Krai.

He added among the locations were Jalan Kuala Betis-Lojing, Batu 18 of the East-West Jeli road and Kampung Chuchuh Puteri.

He said the 18 locations identified for the water surge phenomenon were situated in six districts - Pasir Puteh, Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah, Jeli, Machang and Gua Musang.

"The locations where the water surge phenomenon normally occurs include Jeram Pasu, Lata Rek, Jelawang-Dabong waterfall and Lata Kashmir.

"l would like to remind the public to stop all activities near waterfalls and also avoid passing landslide areas in the upcoming monsoon season," he said.

He was speaking to reporters after attending the department's monthly gathering here today.

Zainal said the department as well as agencies responsible for monitoring such areas, would increase surveillance at these hotspots during the upcoming monsoon season.

On flood preparations, he said the department was ready to face any eventuality of floods hitting the state.

"This time, I believe we will be better prepared to face all possibilities including in the manpower and logistics aspect.

"We were also informed that for Kelantan, the floods are expected to begin in the Pasir Puteh district and our officers in the district have been told to be on alert," he said.
