Melaka govt to provide training for childcare operators after infant's death

ALOR GAJAH: Operators of childcare centres (taska) in the state will be summoned soon following the recent death of eight-month-old Muhammad Al Fateh Amri.

State Women's Affairs, Family Development and Welfare Committee chairman, Datuk Kalsom Nordin was quoting in Kosmo! saying the operators will be provided with training even though guidelines have already been established by the Social Welfare Department.

Kalsom noted that the tragic incident involving the boy is the second such case after the death of six-month-old girl, Haura Najia Mohd Kamaruddin Helsa at another childcare centre in the state on Oct 27, 2022.

"This case involving Al Fateh is similar to the one that occurred two years ago. There are issues at the childcare centres involved, such as neglect and whether the caretakers are aware of their wrongful actions.

"For example, a common practice is to wrap the baby tightly and then feed them, hoping the baby will stay still and go to sleep, although this method of care is incorrect. This is the second case with a similar cause of death.

"We will address this issue thoroughly because I do not want a third or subsequent case with the same modus operandi," she told reporters yesterday.

The case involving Haura had previously gone viral on social media after her mother, Nurul Fateha Sandollah, expressed her frustration with the childcare centre for leaving her baby swaddled for six hours.

She had posted on Facebook that at 4.29pm on Oct 27, 2022, she received a call from the childcare centre stating that Haura was unconscious.

She rushed to the centre, only to be informed that her baby had been taken to Melaka Hospital.

"The doctor informed us that Haura arrived with no pulse. Haura was intubated and fully reliant on a ventilator," she wrote.

Nurul Fateha recounted that her husband spoke with the childcare centre's staff and was told that Haura had been swaddled tightly and fed before being left in a prone position.

"When they returned to the room at 4pm,  Haura was found face down and unresponsive.

"Haura had been left unattended from 10am until she was seen at 4pm," said the posting.
