PUTRAJAYA: The government will address any issues regarding the South China Sea through diplomatic channels, said unity government spokesperson Fahmi Fadzil.
In addressing the concerns of an alleged foreign military vessel encroaching on the Malaysian exclusive economic zone, Fahmi said the cabinet meeting today did not discuss the matter specifically.
"Any arising issues would be handled through diplomatic channels," he said at a weekly press conference.
On Monday, Wisma Putra said it noted the reports of the foreign military vessel.
However, it could not comment on its accuracy or specifics regarding such movements.
This is because such matters fall under the operational security and defence authorities, it was reported as saying.
It also said Malaysia's stance on the South China Sea remains consistent and in accordance with international law, including the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) 1982.
When asked if Malaysia would take the matter to the upcoming United Nations General Assembly, Fahmi said no specific agenda has been mulled, as the foreign minister was not present in today's meeting.
On Sunday, pictures of an alleged foreign military vessel went viral on social media platforms.
The warship was spotted sailing and loitering near an oil rig in the country's EEZ.
