KUALA LUMPUR: Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil has criticised Selangor Pas Youth for proposing that its members marry non-Malay women to gain more votes.
Fahmi said that instead of addressing more constructive issues such as the Domain Name System (DNS), the group chose to make a suggestion that reflected their level of "maturity" and "quality."
"You can't help but 'smile' if this is the level of their thinking.
"There were discussions on social media regarding DNS issues in which the opposition did not participate.
"We hope policy matters could be brought to the forefront, but this is the quality (Pas)," Fahmi said after officiating the National Institute of Public Administration (Intan) Minister's Conversation.
Yesterday, Selangor Pas Youth Secretary Aubidullah Fahim proposed at the annual muktamar that its members marry non-Malay women to secure more votes.
His remarks drew laughter from the audience, with some cheering at the idea of mixed marriages.
In response, Pas Youth Chief Afnan Hamimi Taib Azamudden said the remarks were merely the opinion of one delegate and should not be taken seriously.
Umno secretary-general Datuk Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki also criticised the proposal, saying marriage should not be used as a political tool or for the pursuit of power.
