Jais forms task force, steps up surveillance on religious schools to curb child exploitation

KUALA LUMPUR: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (Jais) has established a special task force to intensify monitoring and investigations of religious schools and tahfiz centres to curb activities involving the exploitation of children and Islam.

State Islamic religious and cultural innovation committee chairman Dr Mohammad Fahmi Ngah said the team, chaired by Jais director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad, is part of the state government's efforts to safeguard Islam from harmful and elements that could be detrimental to Muslims.

"The state government is also committed to ensuring the safety of tahfiz centres and religious schools from becoming sites of child exploitation and deviant teachings.

"Jais is currently conducting monitoring, reviews, and screenings of both registered and unregistered tahfiz centres and religious schools with it," said Fahmi, who is also Selangor Islamic Religious Council (Mais) member, in a statement today.

He said the state government would revoke operating licenses and take stringent action against any tahfiz or religious schools involved in deviant teachings.

He urged those with information on such activities to report them to Jais by calling its hotline at 1-800-88-2424.
