Serdang religious school told to halt classes after student electrocuted

SHAH ALAM: The Selangor Islamic Religious Department (JAIS) has ordered a religious school in Serdang to halt classes after a pupil was electrocuted on Wednesday.

JAIS director Datuk Mohd Shahzihan Ahmad said this would prevent more incidents and to allow investigations to be carried out.

He said representatives from JAIS, the Energy Commission, Tenaga Nasional Bhd, Selangor Public Works Department, police, Occupational Safety and Health Department and the school management had visited the site where the pupil was electrocuted on Thursday.

"We are waiting for the investigation report from the Energy Commission on the safety of each building.

"JAIS will request reports from other agencies and police for further action," he said today.

Last Wednesday, a Year Six pupil died, believed to be due to electrocution, at a school in Serdang.

Shahzihan said a report would be submitted to the Selangor Islamic Religious Council, the state government and the minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Religious Affairs) soon.

He said the KAFA Integrasi Manbaul ULUM School in Taman Sri Serdang, Seri Kembangan, was registered under the Enactment on the Control of Islamic Religious Schools 1988 (Amendment) 2001 and was managed by the school management board.

He said JAIS extended its condolences to the family of the pupil.

"JAIS hopes all management boards of KAFA schools and private religious schools in Selangor will continuously monitor safety matters concerning teachers and pupils and take immediate action when necessary."
