Malaysia and Hungary celebrate 55 years of diplomatic relations

BUDAPEST: The Embassy of Malaysia in Budapest recently hosted an official diplomatic reception to mark the 55th anniversary of Malaysia-Hungary diplomatic ties, as well as Malaysia's upcoming chairmanship of Asean in 2025.

The event, which was held on Thursday (Sept 12) at the Budapest Marriott Hotel, also celebrated Malaysia's 67th National Day and 61st Malaysia Day.

The Malaysian ambassador to Hungary, Francisco Munis, highlighted Malaysia's progress and the long-standing relationship between the two nations.

Munis emphasised that diplomatic ties between Malaysia and Hungary, established in 1969, had translated into numerous agreements in areas such as trade, education and investment.

Last year, bilateral trade between the two nations reached €660 million, a figure Munis hopes to elevate further through the newly established Joint Intergovernmental Committee for Economic and Industrial Cooperation.

The 90-day visa free agreement between both countries will continue to complement and strengthen bilateral relations through business and tourism.

Deputy state secretary for Development of Eastern Relations Adam Stifter, representing Hungary's Foreign Affairs and Trade Minister, reiterated the country's commitment to strengthening ties with Malaysia.

He said both countries shared common values and were committed to a rules-based international order.

The event saw the participation of 200 guests, including officials from Hungary's central government, diplomats, and members of the media.
