Malaysia edge ahead in China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations Golf Series

RAWANG: After losing the third round in June, Team Malaysia bounced back strong in the fourth round of the China-Malaysia 50th-year Diplomatic Relations Golf Series today (Aug 28).

Team Malaysia scored a 11.5 total to beat Team China (8.5) at the Templer Park Country Club with Malaysia's Yusof Mohd Rozi emerging the winner in the gross category.

China's Ou Yang won the medal A category while Lim Hock Ann (Malaysia) won the medal B category. A total of 88 players competed in the fourth round.

Team Malaysia has so far claimed two wins after four rounds while China has one win. The two sides drew during the opening round in February.

Yusof, 17, said he was determined to help Malaysia take the round.

"I knew I had a chance of winning as I am quite used to playing here," said Yusuf.

"It feels great to be able to help Malaysia win the round."

Malaysia's Ambassador to China Datuk Norman Muhamad, who served as Team Malaysia captain, said he had a torrid day on the course but was nevertheless pleased to be part of the competition.

"I just returned from China yesterday but made it a point to compete as this is an important programme which celebrates the diplomatic relations between Malaysia and China," said Norman.

"This is the second time I have been the Team Malaysia captain, unfortunately I was not able to play that well today. Nevertheless, I am looking forward to the upcoming rounds."

The fifth round of the series will be held at the Glenmarie Golf and Country Club on Oct 30 while the final round will be held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club in December, though the exact date has yet to be decided on.

The China-Malaysia Diplomatic Relations Golf Series, which features six rounds, is jointly organised by WDA Technology Sdn Bhd with the New Straits Times Press as official media partner.
