KUALA LUMPUR: Bakery chain Baker's Cottage has expressed regret over the discovery of unsafe levels of E. coli bacteria in its Snow Skin Signature Yam mooncake product in Singapore.
In a statement today, the chain said although it had ensured compliance with the Singapore Food Agency's (SFA) standards before exporting the product, mishandling during transit and storage at a third-party warehouse might have caused the product's deterioration.
"Recent regulatory checks have detected E. coli levels exceeding the standards set by the SFA.
"We sincerely regret this situation and are taking immediate steps to rectify it."
The chain said ensuring the quality and safety of its products remained its highest priority.
"Measures are being implemented to prevent similar issues from occurring in the future."
The SFA had ordered a recall of a mooncake product imported from Malaysia after detecting unsafe levels of E. coli bacteria.
E. coli is typically found in the intestines of people and animals. Food-borne pathogens like E. coli can be introduced during the production process if cross-contamination occurs.
