KUALA LUMPUR: The Malaysian Corruption Watch (MCW) strongly supports the proposal made by Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) to ban or prohibit Immigration officers from using mobile phones while on duty.
MACC chief commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki's proposal is seen as a significant step towards enhancing integrity and reducing opportunities for corruption to take place within the Immigration system.
In a statement today, MCW said the ban on mobile phones could effectively limit communication channels that may be exploited for illicit activities, which could lead to bribes or facilitate illegal entries. It would allow Immigration officers to be focused on their duties.
"This would help minimise distractions and boost efficiency in screening individuals and prevent opportunities for officers to engage in unethical interactions with external parties, including smugglers and individuals attempting to bribe officials to bypass screening protocols."
It said the suggestion is consistent with its fight for better integrity in public services.
"This measure fits within broader efforts to foster a transparent and accountable environment, holding officers to higher standards of conduct."
MCW said by limiting phone use at critical entry points, it would also build public trust and confidence in the Immigration system while reducing perceptions of corruption on officers who are on duty.
"MCW views this initiative as part of a comprehensive reform effort aimed at strengthening integrity and transparency within enforcement agencies at the nation's borders.
"The organisation encourages all stakeholders to support measures that uphold the highest ethical standards in public service," it said.
