Heed red flag alerts at Langkawi beaches, public told

LANGKAWI: Visitors to Langkawi have been advised to observe red flag alerts at the island's popular beaches due to strong waves and choppy waters.

District Disaster Management Committee chairman Mohamad Subhi Abdullah said people should cease recreational activities immediately when a red flag is raised by Malaysia Civil Defence Force personnel in Pantai Chenang and Pantai Tengah here.

"The CDF team is monitoring conditions at these two beaches and will duly advise visitors accordingly in the event of an alarming situation," Subhi said today.

"We have also activated the Langkawi Disaster Operation Command Centre, comprising multiple departments and agencies, to prepare for any eventualities."

Subhi, who is also district officer, said the public can contact the command centre, available 24/7, at 04-9611 474 or 04-9611 574, or via WhatsApp at 019-566 1667.

District CDF officer Khairul Afzan Md Yasin said the agency had raised the red flag in Pantai Chenang and Pantai Tengah for the past three days.

"The warning sign was raised after waves reached 3.5m due to heavy rainfall and strong wind, which may expose visitors to danger.

"At the moment, all recreational activities are not allowed along the beach fronts until the situation improves," he said.

The tourist island has seen more than 100,000 visitors since school break began on Friday.
