BUTTERWORTH: The Penang government will hold a discussion soon to decide on the kind of assistance to be given to flood victims in the state.
State Social and Welfare Development Committee chairman Lim Siew Khim, who visited flood victims seeking temporary shelter at SK Lahar Yooi in Tasek Gelugor here this evening, said she was here to listen to their needs.
"I will discuss with Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow to see how best we can help the victims.
"The meeting will be held soon," she told reporters.
As at 7pm, there are currently 590 flood victims in eight flood relief centres in three districts namely Seberang Prai Utara, Seberang Prai Tengah and Seberang Prai Selatan.
Three centres have since been closed.
Lim said the remaining flood victims could not return home as their houses were still inundated in flood water.
"I spoke to the 'makcik' staying here. They said that while they are grateful for all the assistance rendered, their hearts remain at home.
"We can only pray for the situation to improve so that they can return home," she added, noting that she was grateful there was no untoward incident among the flood victims.
